He kamali’i o këia ‘äina
A child of this land

was touched by the moon that shines brightly

A child youthful, strong, powerful

A hawk poised
mälie ka makani ‘ino
calm in the face of the storm

‘O Pu’upele, ka makani o Mänä

Pu’upele is the wind of Mänä

e ho’olale ka wa’a onä, ka makani kükulu pe’a nui

calling forth the canoe, it is the wind that sets up the big sails

Ua lu’ulu’u Hanalei i ka ua nui, kaumaha i ka noe
‘O Hanalei burdened with great rains and heavy mist
Ho`olai manu i ke aheahe
A bird is poised quietly in the gentle breeze

Hulihia nä moku, nakeke ka ‘äina, kualakai, kühulukü ka mauna
Overturned is the islands, rumbling the land, quivering, and quaking are the mountains
Ke hö’eu’eu nei i ka pu’uwai, e pu’uwai hao kila, e
Stirring now is the heart, be courageous
E mälie ka makani ‘ino, e mälie
Be still storm, be still

Hia’ai iä oükou i ke honi aku ku’u ala, e
Revel in delight when you inhale my fragrance
Na ka moani lä i hali mai, hone ana i ke kai
brought by the moani breeze, spreading sweetly to the sea
aia ka leo ‘olu ho’ïloli o ka waipahë
where the sweet voice that is still alive with tenderness for me

aia ke kai kani’ahë o ka ulu hala i ka lä ko`u kamali’i, e
there where the sea ever laughs softly in the pandanus groves as in the days of my childhood

Waiho kähela i ka la’i, ‘Alohi ka lä ke awäkea

there I lay stretched out, bright as the sun at noon

e kali, no ku’u mau hoa a ka noe ‘ehu
waiting for my companions of the misty spray
Hala ka lu’ulu’u kaumaha, e
The heavy sorrow is over
Ka wä e ma’alili ana ke kaumaha, e
And in time the sorrow will be soothed
Kahiko i Nu`uanu ka ua Wa`ahila
Adorned is Nu`uanu by the Wa`ahila rain
